About Us
St Peter’s School is a Special Education school that works with young boys and girls aged between 5 and 18 years old. The school has a capacity for 60 students. There are 10 classes, 6 at primary level and 4 at Junior Cycle level. Each class generally has 6 students, a teacher and 1 to 2 SNAs. Our Junior Corridor is lucky enough to have access to two social care workers who help them learn the skills they need to manage school life. Our school secretary welcomes all students and visitors as they enter the building, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Our caretaker looks after our school building and grounds. The principal works with parents, students and staff. She also liaises with any external agencies involved with the school and its community. In our school we welcome children/ young people who struggle to manage their own behaviour and emotions. All our students work at their own individual level. Each student has an Individual Education Plan and a Positive Behaviour Support Plan. The school engages with the primary curriculum and participates in the new Junior Cycle and students work towards its completion at both level 2 and 3.
Mission Statement & Ethos
St Peters School is a Catholic school under the patronage of the Archbishop of Dublin. We are guided by the core values of the St John of God Brothers. While caring for children from different religious backgrounds the school promotes and maintains a Catholic ethos. St Peters recognises the right of every young person to an education where he or she may reach their full potential. The school recognises the uniqueness of each young person and fully understands that each individual may develop and grow in diverse ways. Therefore, this school takes a holistic approach to education, endeavouring to meet the varying needs of our students in an individualistic, child- centred manner.
Our Aims
- To offer each young person an opportunity to develop his or her capabilities so that they may participate fully in society.
- To nurture a sense of personal identity and promote the self-esteem of each young person, enabling them to become well rounded happy young people with a true sense of self-worth.
- To provide equality in the development of the educational potential of all our students regardless of any obstacles they may face.
- To develop the knowledge and skills of each student, thus enabling them to think and act constructively.
- To foster and develop the creativity of each young person.
- To promote the physical and emotional wellbeing of each young person.
- To encourage tolerance and acceptance for diversity in each young person.
- To encourage respect in each young person’s dealings with other students, staff members and society in general.
- To encourage the students to make good choices in their lives.
OUR SCHOOL OBJECTIVES
- To assess the varying needs of each student so that an individual tailored educational plan can be developed for that young person which takes account of the way that each individual student learns best.
- To observe the behaviours of each student to develop an appropriately Individualised Behavioural Support Plan.
- To provide the opportunities for each student to feel a sense of success and thereby build self-esteem, through the development of rapport and connection with students.
- To use the experience and training of each staff member to create a happy and safe environment that is conducive to learning.
